what should i wear to my portrait session?

For the parents: wear something you feel pretty or handsome in! You need to be confident about yourself when you get your picture taken. Aside from that, avoid large bright patterns, shorts, and anything excessively baggy. Also, try to wear classic clothes – anything too trendy will look silly in a few years (remember those pictures you took in the 80s?). Try to coordinate with the other individuals in the photo so that you’re not clashing (but please don’t be super matchy-matchy). Also really important – styles of clothing should match across the board!

For the baby: keep it simple! My favorite outfit is actually just a diaper. Simple onsies are also a favorite classic! Try to keep things like baggy clothes and ruffles to a minimum, as these clothes bunch up and tend to not photograph well. Another tip is to bring or plan a few extra outfits in case of unexpected spit-up or blowout emergencies.

Once I know the location of a shoot, I always try to make a few personalized suggestions about ideal style or colors of clothing but as long as you follow the general guidelines above, you should be on the right track.

what do we do if it rains?

If there is inclement weather and we have an outdoor session planned, I like to reschedule if possible. I often like to work with natural light, and I rarely like the light excessively overcast skies provide. We also don’t want to keep your baby outside in bad weather! However, if it is impossible to reschedule, I will do my absolute best to work with you to find an indoor location. Oftentimes, my studio can serve as a backup location. For other indoor spots, please keep in mind that most locations do require a permit and charge a fee.

For studio and home sessions, no worries! We’re good to shoot rain or shine!

where/when do i see my pictures after the session?

I will have “sneak peek” of 5-10 images available to you within approximately a week of the session. The full set of photos is generally available 4-6 weeks after the session. This can sometimes vary by a week or two depending on the time of year (I will give you a heads up if that’s the case before you book!).

As soon as I edit all the photos, I will post them on my proofing site and will email you to let you know they're ready. From there, you can pass the link around to your family and friends, order prints, and just gaze at the multitude of photos. If you purchased the high-res images, or if they came with your package, then I will also be providing the files to you.

how do you schedule the session with unpredictable birth dates?

I totally understand that we’re on your baby’s schedule! We put your due date on the contract, but I ask that you (or your significant other, or a parent) contact me when you actually have the baby. From there, we’ll pick a date within 2 weeks for the shoot. I take on a very limited number of newborn sessions a month to make sure I have at least two free days a week that I can make work for a session. Please keep in mind that these available dates may be weekdays – I’m primarily a wedding photographer, and am shooting weddings on the weekends (especially during the warm months!)

can i share my photos on facebook?

Definitely! I would love if you share your photos of Facebook or other social media sites. Credit provided to Redwall Photo is always appreciated!

what kind of products do you offer?

I highly recommend getting your photos printed in some form, because that's how they're meant to be viewed. Don't confine your photos to your computer screen! For that reason, I offer everything from prints, to canvases, to portrait books. My absolute favorite item is the portrait album. If there is a product or print size that you are specifically interested in, please let me know. I work with several professional labs and print companies; I can probably get it for you!

What else should I know?

Definitely check out my about page to get to know more about me and my style if you haven’t already! And, if you’re super excited and ready to book, contact me! To get on my calendar, I need a signed contract, and 50% retainer.
